A List Apart: The Survey 2008 I just took the 2008 survey and I recommend that all in the field do so too. It’s important to have a better view of the field and how we are growing, who are our peers. Now it’s waiting time for the results…

StockExchange non-phishing??

Filed under: WTH?? — FayeC @ 4:16 pm
First of all I have to say that I absolutely love Stock Exchange and I use them quite often. I got an email today from StockExchange that looked pretty official. It was letting users know that their privacy policy had changed. Very nicely worded and all…then I get to the links to the new privacy policy and it had a link to a completely different domain so I thought to myself “PHISHING!!”. I contacted SXC.hu right away to let them know that there was a phishing scam going around and to my surprise got an email from them saying that it was legitimate. In this day and age where more and more people are being made aware of phishing and the risks of clicking on links on emails that look fairly official but take you to a “skinned” page where you will login and inadvertently give away your login and password combination you would think that they would have kept their click throughs a little bit more recognizable? This is my WTH?? of today.

Cuil: Features page not found?

Filed under: Design, Reviews — FayeC @ 9:46 am
Cuil doesn\'t find me.I was checking Cuil this morning. Attracted by the boasting of being a more powerful search engine than Google I had to try it. I started with browsing the site’s About pages and what was my surprise to see that it couldn’t find it’s own Features page. When I clicked on the Features tab I got a “Oops! We couldn’t find that page.”. Somehow that was a little discouraging… As Chris Brogan says on his “Cuil Misses Me” post, it can’t even find my domain name if I type it in full. And boy was it slow as molasses… I guess everybody else is doing what Chris and I did - searching our own names, nicknames, domains, to see what it comes up with. I will try again tomorrow…

sIFR3 font file mystery solved

Filed under: Design, Tutorials — FayeC @ 3:28 pm
So I had that little problem creating new font files for sIFR3. As I posted yesterday, I either got the “Please pass in your text.” error or just a blank where my text should be. It turns out that whenever I used the text tool in Flash to select the text and change it to another font I ended up with a blank font .swf. When creating new font files for sIFR3 just open the .fla in Flash (I am using CS3) and using the select tool double click the movie clip in the library. When the movie clip opens it will automatically select the text box. At that point you can change the font to be used in the file, save movie as (I use the font name for the font file) and export the movie. You can test the movie before exporting and if you see “Rendered with sIFR3…” it means the font file is working correctly.
